Final Fantasy XIV can be a bit troublesome for new players. The glamour system is a topic that often causes confusion among sprouts — it’s an old system, so in this guide I’ll tell you everything about it without taking much of your time.
If you come from a game like World of Warcraft, the glamour system in FFXIV is basically transmogs, or the Wardrobe in Guild Wars 2.
In the next paragraphs, we’ll go over how to unlock and use the glamour system.
How to unlock the glamour system
To unlock the glamour system, you must be at least level 15. Then, you can complete the blue quest “If I Had a Glamour.”
Here are the steps to complete the quest and unlock the glamour system:
- •Teleport to Western Thanalan.
- •Visit to start the quest.

- •I won’t spoil the quest, but you’ll talk to Folclind and then return to Swyrgeim — that’s basically it!
If you have trouble finding Swyrgeim, she’s located in Vesper Bay. If you’re a new player doing the MSQ, that’s around The Waking Sands area.
You can also travel to Vesper Bay from Limsa Lominsa:
Go to the main Aetheryte in Limsa, teleport to the Arcanist’s Guild mini Aetheryte, then walk left and speak to the Ferry Skipper.
Select Vesper Bay. Once there, follow the blue quest icon on your map to find Swyrgeim.
How to use the glamour system
You’ve unlocked the glamour system — but now what is it for? How do you actually use it?
There are many ways to make use of it, but I’ll skip the confusing parts and go straight to the core.
Before you start, casting glamours requires an item called a Glamour Prism.
You can get it from the market board (not available for free trial), with Grand Company seals, or in several other ways — don’t worry about that for now!
Here are the steps to create a glamour plate and apply it in-game:
- •Go to an Inn in any main city.
- •Find the Glamour Dresser (a piece of furniture) and right-click it.
- •You’ll see two windows:
- •The left shows items you’ve already turned into glamours.
- •The right shows items you can turn into glamours.
- •Click an item in the right window and turn it into a glamour.
- •Now open the dresser.
- •You’ll see a new window with your Glamour Plate tabs — pick the items you’ve added to make outfit sets.
- •When you’re ready, click Apply.
- •Close all glamour windows.
- •Open your Character Info window (default shortcut: C).
- •Click on Glamour Plate.
- •Select the tab of your glamour.
- •Click Apply.
After following these steps, your current gear will take the appearance of your glamour plate — but will keep the same stats as before.
In short: with glamour plates, you can quickly apply different styles to your gear, changing only the appearance while keeping the original items.
This is the core of the glamour system and what you’ll use most often. Below is a short FAQ covering some extra details.
Glamour System FAQ
How to remove the glamour from an item
- •Right-click the item and select Cast Glamour.
- •Select the item on the left window.
- •Choose the first option, Remove, on the right window.
- •Click Dispel. This consumes one Glamour Dispeller.
Can I glamour as a free trial player?
Yes! As a free trial player, you can unlock the glamour system and glamour. Your only limitation is that you can only obtain items which are obtainable as a free trial player.
Where do I get more Glamour Prisms?
I mentioned that you can buy the glamour prisms from the market board, or get them with Grand Company seals, but let's expand on this topic more.
For non–free trial players, the market board will be the easiest way to get a stack of glamour prisms and not have to worry about them for a good while.
Here are some sources of glamour prisms:
- •Craft them. By unlocking Absolutely Glamourous or Submission Impossible, you can get a recipe to craft glamour prisms. You can start Absolutely Glamourous in Vesper Bay, with Swyrgeim — the same NPC where you unlocked glamours.
All Disciples of the Hand can craft prisms. After completing the required quest, you can buy the recipe from the NPC Goberin in Vesper Bay.
To craft the prism, you need two crystals of different types (depending on your job), one material which varies by your job, and a Clear Prism.

- •Use your Grand Company seals: Speak with the Quartermaster of your Grand Company — you can buy Glamour Prisms for 200 seals each.
- •Bicolor Gemstones: Lakeland, Kholusia, Amh Araeng, Il Mheg, The Rak'tika Greatwood, and The Tempest are areas where you can buy prisms using Bicolor Gemstones, after completing the required Shared Fate rank in the area.
- •Island Sanctuary: One of the robot NPCs in your Island Sanctuary cabin will sell you prisms for 150 Islander's Cowries.
Where do I get Clear Prisms?
Various NPCs will sell you the Clear Prism for 200 gil. For example, the Apartment Merchants in various residential districts, and Goberin at Vesper Bay (Western Thanalan 12.1, 15).
You can also get it from these duties:
- •The Dusk Vigil
- •Sohm Al
- •The Aery
- •The Vault
- •The Great Gubal Library
- •Neverreap
- •The Fractal Continuum
But my recommendation is that you just buy it from the NPCs instead, and avoid the market board for items that are sold by NPCs.
Glamour System Recap
The glamour system may seem a bit complicated — because it is — but in this guide I tried to focus on the parts that matter, so you can better get started with glamouring. Now go show off your nice glamour in Limsa Lominsa!
